SUMMARY:6 Week Series for Bone Health (In-Person & Virtual) w/ Diane Saccone
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This date refers to the first of 6 sessions. This course will occur over 6 consecutive Mondays from June 1st through July 6th from 10:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. Should you need to miss a session\, it will be recorded and accessible for 2 months. \nFrailty Syndrome is a term used to describe a body-wide set of interconnected issues including musculoskeletal\, cardiovascular\, metabolic and immunologic systems. This group of symptoms is related to the decline of health as we age either as a result of habit\, chronic disease or a combination of both. As we move less\, muscular weakness and atrophy set in\, which cascades to the nervous system\, causing the nervous system not to fire as efficiently because of the lack of muscles to stimulate into action. \nPoor habits\, social isolation and lifestyle contribute to accelerated aging as well as stress and a negative attitude on life. This series will incorporate yoga techniques and strength training to combat common results of Frailty Syndrome\, like Sarcopenia and Osteoporosis. \nSarcopenia- The loss of muscle mass\, where the muscles that die and are replaced by fat\, begins around the age of 30 along with loss of bone mineral density at the rate of 1% per year. \nOsteoporosis-The risk of bone fracture- increases due to the increasing loss of bone mineral density as we move past the age of 30.  \nYou will also learn how our sensory faculties work in concert to create efficient neuromuscular movement\, sensorimotor integration\, and musculoskeletal activation. We will examine how the brain integrates and processes information and input from the visual\, sensory\, and vestibular systems and how yoga and functional fitness can help us enhance neuromuscular integration to maintain stability and mobility throughout our lives. \nAdditional skills we will learn include: \n\nThe importance of proprioception\, especially how the proprioceptively rich palms of the hands and soles of the feet play a key role in establishing better balance in both stillness and movement\nDiscussions around new research about proprioception that shows how it may help restore balance in cases of stroke\, Parkinson’s\, and other chronic conditions that affect walking\nHow to enhance proprioceptive awareness through asana practice\nHow to work with breath-based asana practice to progressively build better balance and stabilize your system from the core outward\nThe role of the foot in maintaining postural equilibrium as the foot moves from static placement to shifting balance in the activities of daily living\, such as walking\, stair climbing\, and reaching\nSimple steps you can take throughout the day to improve your balance\n\nThis course will be available through zoom recordings and digital for those who do not live closeby or may miss a class. Recordings will be available for 2 months after the program concludes. \nStudents will receive a workbook along with the course and this course qualifies for 20 CEUs with Yoga Alliance. SUMMARY:Yoga & Self-Care for Bodyworkers and Caretakers w/ Jenny Bourdette
DESCRIPTION:Please create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. If you have any questions regarding registration\, or financial aid\, please email Kelsey at  kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \n\n \n \nIn this workshop\, we’ll review why as bodyworkers and caregivers\, it is equally important that we care for our own vessel.\n\nA lot of times as a caregiver\, one can absorb a lot of the physical and emotional stress that comes from those that we work with\, especially if you are a highly sensitive person.  The tasks at hand can be physically demanding\, the grief\, the emotional exchange\, it adds up and it can be very easy to lose a sense of self in while in caregiving roles. This course will focus on various physical and energetic methods of self-care for the bodyworker or caretaker\, or anyone who works with students\, clients or patients in a healing or supportive role. \nJenny will guide students through pranayama (or breath work)\, mantras\, energy healing through sound\, open discussion on ways we can hold energetic boundaries\, Qigong and movement through yoga postures to focus on areas of tension common in therapists and care takers. The methods provided will stem from Traditional Chinese Medicine\, Taoism and Yoga. \nThe goal of this course is to assist the students in refilling their own cups in ways that resonate for them\, and offering ways they can care for themselves\, so they can better show up for others in their work and lives. \nTogether\, we’ll focus on replenishing energy\, finding movements that help to restore the physical and emotional bodies. \nThere will be an open discussion on other methods/tools students would like to share with group and a Yin and Restorative Yoga practice followed by a meditation to close out together. \nStudents would leave with new tools\, knowledge\, and methods on caring for and replenishing their energetic and physical bodies to alleviate feelings of depletion or burnout in the field of bodywork or caretaking. \nThere will be handouts with some of the practices we do in the workshop\, mantras\, and resources. \n \nJenny teaches weekly donation-based Chair Yoga on Mondays at 12pm. To learn more about her\, see her teacher profile here! \n \nCost: $45 \n\nFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk or email Kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. Registering in advance guarantees your spot and helps the studio have adequate staffing. If fewer than 5 participants register the event may be canceled. \nRefund Policy: We understand that life happens and unforeseen circumstances come up. SUMMARY:Tennis Ball Therapy (In-person & Virtual) w/ Diane Saccone
DESCRIPTION:Please create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. If you have any questions regarding registration\, or financial aid\, please email Kelsey at  kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org  \n \n \nTennis ball therapy uses tennis balls to release movement restrictions\, restore mobility\, and reduce pain by targeting the connective tissue network\, rather than muscles alone\, making it an affordable and effective tool for muscle care. \nKey benefits include: -Pain relief as pressure from the tennis ball stimulates the release of endorphins\, the body’s natural painkillers\, which help block pain signals -Improved flexibility\, by reducing muscle tightness promoting a better range of motion-Enhanced circulation through stimulating blood flow\, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the targeted muscles. This improved circulation aids in the removal of metabolic waste products\, reducing inflammation and promoting faster muscle recovery-Muscle relaxation & Reduces stress: The gentle pressure and stimulation of the skin promote relaxation and reduce stress levels\, contributing to overall well-being. \nSelf-massage with tennis balls is greatly enhanced by stretching\, which further increases circulation and re-educates the muscles to rest for a longer length. Stretching allows muscles to be softer\, more fluid and longer in their resting state. Combining asana with self-massage is particularly useful for those of us who have muscles that for various reasons (injury\, overuse\, or years of inactivity) resist stretching. \nIn this workshop\, we will use tennis ball therapy to unlock the feet and gluteals\, lengthen the hamstrings and adductors\, open and relax the shoulders\, arms hands and neck to the muscles along the spine which will restore balance to the body and the mind through the action of prana. We will begin at the bottom of the body and work our way up to the head and then finish our time together in a relaxing 10 minute savasana. This practice is safe for all age levels and abilities. \nAn e-workbook with the exercises we will be doing will be provided prior to the workshop. Bring two tennis balls and a sock to hold the tennis balls to the workshop. 5 CEU’s will be offered to yoga teachers and qualifying health practitioners. \n \nDiane Saccone\, MS MT (ASACP) ERYT 500 spent the majority of her career in the field of Clinical Laboratory medicine changing careers after her move with her husband to Western North Carolina in 2005.
