SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Yoga & The Quest for The True Self by Stephen Cope
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! Community Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. Please consider checking out from your local library\, or buying used. The audiobook is available as well. \nFrom GoodReads.com: \nMillions of Americans know yoga as a superb form of exercise and as a potent source of calm in our stress-filled lives. Far fewer are aware of the full promise of yoga as a 4\,000-year-old practical path of liberation—a path that fits the needs of modern Western seekers with startling precision. \nNow Stephen Cope\, a Western-trained psychotherapist who has lived and taught for more than ten years at the largest yoga center in America\, offers this marvelously lively and irreverent “pilgrim’s progress” for today’s world. He demystifies the philosophy\, psychology\, and practice of yoga\, and shows how it applies to our most human dilemmas: from loss\, disappointment\, and addiction\, to the eternal conflicts around sex and relationship. And he shows us that in yoga\, “liberation” does not require us to leave our everyday lives for some transcendent spiritual plane—life itself is the path. \nAbove all\, Cope shows how yoga can heal the suffering of self-estrangement that pervades our society\, leading us to a new sense of purpose and to a deeper\, more satisfying life in the world. \nFor more information on the book club facilitator Stephen\, please see his teacher profile here!  He teaches donation-based Warm Vinyasa Flow Mondays 7:30am-8:30am\, Gentle Flow Mondays 12:15-1:15pm\, and Warm Vinyasa Flow Tuesdays 4:15pm-5:15pm. \nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. If you have any questions regarding registration\, please email Kelsey at  kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \nLate Policy: Doors will close at the workshop start time. We encourage you to arrive at least 15 minutes before the workshop start time to ensure there is ample time to park\, check in and settle in to your space. We do have a 10 minute grace period\, and we encourage you to call the studio to let us know if you are running behind. If you are later than 10 minutes after the start of the workshop\, there is a chance you will not be able to enter and no refund will be given. \n\nCapacity: Please note: Some workshops will fill to capacity of 28 students.

SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Who Do You Want To Be When You Grow Old By Richard J. Leider & David Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! Special guest community member Rob Koegel is co-hosting this round with Stephen Volkman\, so please join us in community to discuss “Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old?: The Path of Purposeful Aging” by Richard J. Leider & David Shapiro. \nCommunity Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. Please consider checking out from your local library\, or buying used. The audiobook is available as well. \nThis book brings to life the dramatic differences between two views of aging. The first\, by far the most common\, is fearful of “getting old.” The second\, while aware of age-related challenges\, is intrigued by the untapped possibilities of “growing old.” Some of the questions we will explore in our highly interactive discussion are: \nWhat enables some elders to blend wisdom with grace\, purpose with meaning\, and personal transformation with social contribution? What can they teach us about how to make the most of these life-enhancing opportunities? \nHow does living in an ageist society affect how we think about and respond to the complex process of aging? \nHow can we deepen our ability to use the challenges and possibilities of aging to hone our inner strengths and to become more of the person we long to be? \nSince our discussion will be based on the questions\, concerns\, andexperiences of the participants\, please join us even if you have only read part of this book. SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! \nGather in community to discuss “Between The World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. \nFrom GoodReads.com: \n“This is your country\, this is your world\, this is your body\, and you must find some way to live within the all of it.” \n \nIn a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son\, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race\,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation\, and\, today\, threatened\, locked up\, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? \n \nBetween the World and Meis Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences\, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields\, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris\, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative\, reimagined history\, and fresh\, emotionally charged reportage\,Between the World and Meclearly illuminates the past\, bracingly confronts our present\, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward. \n \nFor more information on Stephen\, please see his teacher profile here! \nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: You Belong: A Call for Connection by Sebene Selassie
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! \nGather in community to discuss “You Belong: A Call for Connection” by Sebene Selassie. Community Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \nFrom much-admired meditation expert and Western Buddhist thought leader\, You Belong is a social and spiritual call to action\, exploring our tangled relationship with belonging\, connection\, and each other \nTo belong is to experience joy and freedom in any moment: to feel pleasure\, dance in public\, accept death\, forgive what seems unforgivable\, and extend kindness to yourself and others (note: sometimes what’s kind looks fierce). Even in these times of polarization and planetary crisis\, belonging is possible. In fact\, belonging is our only way forward. Full of practical wisdom and profound revelations\, YOU BELONG makes a winning case for resisting the forces that demand separation and reclaiming the connection—and belonging—that have been ours all along. \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. Please consider checking out from your local library\, or buying used. The audiobook is available as well. \nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Breath by James Nestor
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! \nGather in community to discuss “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art” by James Nestor. Community Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \n‘Who would have thought something as simple as changing the way we breathe could be so revolutionary for our health\, from snoring to allergies to immunity? A fascinating book\, full of dazzling revelations’ Dr Rangan Chatterjee \nThere is nothing more essential to our health and wellbeing than breathing: take air in\, let it out\, repeat 25\,000 times a day. Yet\, as a species\, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly\, with grave consequences. In Breath\, journalist James Nestor travels the world to discover the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. \nModern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can: \n– jump-start athletic performance– rejuvenate internal organs– halt snoring\, allergies\, asthma and autoimmune disease\, and even straighten scoliotic spines \nNone of this should be possible\, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge studies in pulmonology\, psychology\, biochemistry and human physiology\, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. \nYou will never breathe the same again. \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. The Power of Now was a question-and-answer handbook. A New Earth has been written as a traditional narrative\, offering anecdotes and philosophies in a way that is accessible to all. \nIlluminating\, enlightening\, and uplifting\, A New Earth is a profoundly spiritual manifesto for a better way of life—and for building a better world. \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book.
