SUMMARY:Kirtan w/ Mantra Mandala

Please arrive early for ample time to park and settle in.\nWhat is kirtan? \nDerived from a Sanskrit root meaning to call\, recite\, praise\, or glorify\, put simply\, kirtan is the act of praising and glorifying some form of divinity. While such glorification can be expressed in a variety of ways\, including through poetry\, drama\, dance\, or any form of oral recitation\, kirtan\, in its most well-known form\, is the call and response singing of a Sanskrit mantra. Tap into the spiritual energy of bhakti yoga\, the yoga of love and devotion\, as you sing your way to joy and peace. \nMantra Mandala: \nMantra Mandala is a kirtan band based in Asheville\, NC. They weave melody\, rhythm\, and harmony to create an immersive sound that invites listeners into a journey of meditative bliss and devotion. \nMantra Mandala will feature Jeremy Staum (vocals\, harmonium)\, Nina Kawar (vocals\, percussion)\, Mackenzie Wilkins (vocals\, drums) and Vishudda Regner (drums\, kartals). \nThe band’s name\, Mantra Mandala\, represents the intention behind their music. Mantra and mandala are both meditation tools. Mantra is the repetition of sacred sounds. Mandala is a geometric design that represents the wholeness of the Self. The band’s music is like a mandala formed of mantras\, transporting listeners into the state of connectedness that is yoga. \nDoors open at 5:30pm\, Kirtan is 6-7:30pm. Please arrive early for ample time to park and settle in.\nSliding Scale: $10- $30 \nPlease use the drop down menu to pay what you can to support this local band!\nNo one turned away due to lack of funds.  \n\n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:6 Week Series for Bone Health (In-Person & Virtual) w/ Diane Saccone
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This date refers to the first of 6 sessions. This course will occur over 6 consecutive Mondays from January 26th through March 2nd from 10:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. Should you need to miss a session\, it will be recorded and accessible for 2 months. \nFrailty Syndrome is a term used to describe a body-wide set of interconnected issues including musculoskeletal\, cardiovascular\, metabolic and immunologic systems. This group of symptoms is related to the decline of health as we age either as a result of habit\, chronic disease or a combination of both. As we move less\, muscular weakness and atrophy set in\, which cascades to the nervous system\, causing the nervous system not to fire as efficiently because of the lack of muscles to stimulate into action. \nPoor habits\, social isolation and lifestyle contribute to accelerated aging as well as stress and a negative attitude on life. This series will incorporate yoga techniques and strength training to combat common results of Frailty Syndrome\, like Sarcopenia and Osteoporosis. \nSarcopenia- The loss of muscle mass\, where the muscles that die and are replaced by fat\, begins around the age of 30 along with loss of bone mineral density at the rate of 1% per year. \nOsteoporosis-The risk of bone fracture- increases due to the increasing loss of bone mineral density as we move past the age of 30.  \nYou will also learn how our sensory faculties work in concert to create efficient neuromuscular movement\, sensorimotor integration\, and musculoskeletal activation. We will examine how the brain integrates and processes information and input from the visual\, sensory\, and vestibular systems and how yoga and functional fitness can help us enhance neuromuscular integration to maintain stability and mobility throughout our lives. \nAdditional skills we will learn include: \n\nThe importance of proprioception\, especially how the proprioceptively rich palms of the hands and soles of the feet play a key role in establishing better balance in both stillness and movement\nDiscussions around new research about proprioception that shows how it may help restore balance in cases of stroke\, Parkinson’s\, and other chronic conditions that affect walking\nHow to enhance proprioceptive awareness through asana practice\nHow to work with breath-based asana practice to progressively build better balance and stabilize your system from the core outward\nThe role of the foot in maintaining postural equilibrium as the foot moves from static placement to shifting balance in the activities of daily living\, such as walking\, stair climbing\, and reaching\nSimple steps you can take throughout the day to improve your balance\n\nThis course will be available through zoom recordings and digital for those who do not live closeby or may miss a class. Recordings will be available for 2 months after the program concludes. \nStudents will receive a workbook along with the course and this course qualifies for 20 CEUs with Yoga Alliance. CEU’s may also be available for Physical and Occupational Therapists. SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Who Do You Want To Be When You Grow Old By Richard J. Leider & David Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! Special guest community member Rob Koegel is co-hosting this round with Stephen Volkman\, so please join us in community to discuss “Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old?: The Path of Purposeful Aging” by Richard J. Leider & David Shapiro. \nCommunity Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. Please consider checking out from your local library\, or buying used. The audiobook is available as well. \nThis book brings to life the dramatic differences between two views of aging. The first\, by far the most common\, is fearful of “getting old.” The second\, while aware of age-related challenges\, is intrigued by the untapped possibilities of “growing old.” Some of the questions we will explore in our highly interactive discussion are: \nWhat enables some elders to blend wisdom with grace\, purpose with meaning\, and personal transformation with social contribution? What can they teach us about how to make the most of these life-enhancing opportunities? \nHow does living in an ageist society affect how we think about and respond to the complex process of aging? \nHow can we deepen our ability to use the challenges and possibilities of aging to hone our inner strengths and to become more of the person we long to be? \nSince our discussion will be based on the questions\, concerns\, andexperiences of the participants\, please join us even if you have only read part of this book. \nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. If you have any questions regarding registration\, please email Kelsey at  kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \nLate Policy: Doors will close at the workshop start time. We encourage you to arrive at least 15 minutes before the workshop start time to ensure there is ample time to park\, check in and settle in to your space. We do have a 10 minute grace period\, and we encourage you to call the studio to let us know if you are running behind. SUMMARY:Partner Yoga & Thai Bodywork w/ Leaflin Winecoff
DESCRIPTION:Partner yoga is a great way to connect with your asana practice in a new way\, while deepening connection with a loved one. \nThai yoga massage (sometimes called “lazy person’s yoga”) is an ancient practice that can be described as a symbiotic healing dance\, where the benefits of yoga are experienced by both the giver and the receiver. We use hands\, feet\, elbows\, knees\, rhythm and gravity to gently open the energetic channels of the body\, restoring ease and flow. This practice is done fully clothed on a mat on the floor\, and typically does not use oils. \nThe aim of this workshop is to foster connection through curiosity\, compassion\, and communication\, and awaken our innate healing capabilities! We’ll warm up with a few simple partner yoga practices before delving into some basic (but extremely effective!) Thai -inspired massage techniques. \nThe basics of intelligent body mechanics\, giving and receiving\, and cultivation of loving kindness are paramount to to this practice\, and will be cultivated throughout. This is not a training to become a professional bodyworker\, but is meant to provide participants with useful tools to be shared with friends and loved ones. The hope is that you’ll leave feeling great in your own body\, and inspired to help others feel great in theirs! *Please do come with a partner you feel comfortable practicing with. \nPlease note: This workshop is limited to 20 participants and you must come with a partner in order to participate. Both people need to register on Mindbody to reserve your space! \n*Modifications and variations will be shared for every technique taught as there is no one-size-fits-all massage. Please arrive in good health and ability to communicate your body’s needs. \n*You must be a Licensed Massage Therapist in the state of North Carolina to charge for bodywork. Please share this practice responsibly with those you trust. \nFor more information on Leaflin\, please see her teacher profile here. She teaches weekly donation-based Gentle Flow on Wednesdays 6:15pm-7:15pm. \n \nCost: $30 per personFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk\, call\, or email kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org. \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:Savasana: The Art to Complete Relaxation w/ Diane Saccone
DESCRIPTION:Because we normally move our bodies around\, the movements of the mind are not so apparent. But when we learn to hold the pose and remain still\, suddenly\, we notice clearly how agitated the mind is. \nSavasana\, or basic relaxation pose\, is one of the most important and ancient poses in yoga. The practice of savasana or corpse pose\, is meditative. It can be the doorway to deeper states of meditation and gives the student the most important gift that can be given. This gift is called disidentification. \nIn Chapter I of the Yoga Sutras\, Patanjali discusses the false identification of thoughts and Self. He teaches that this false identification is at the root of all misery. He further teaches that yoga practices are about dissolving this false identification. The great gift of savasana is that the student can begin to separate from his/her thoughts. As one moves more deeply through relaxation\, one begins to enter another state in which thought is experienced as a surface phenomenon. Then\, one can begin to experience a little space between the thought and what is perceived as the Self. \nOne teacher has said\, “The problem with our thoughts is that we believe them.” The problem with believing our thoughts is that we then act from them in a way that can cause suffering in ourselves and others. When a little space is experienced between one’s thoughts and the consciousness\, which is the background for thought\, then thought does not have the same power. Thus\, with this dis-identification comes choice. When one dis-identifies with the thought\, one can choose to act from that thought or not; it no longer has as much power to control. When one can act from choice\, this leads to freedom. The gift of beginning to understand the process of dis-identification is arguably the most powerful gift one can receive. \nStaying still is a powerful practice. When one learns to hold savasana\, one learns to let the stillness of the body become a backdrop for the constant movement of the mind. This art of consciously staying still begins to teach the art of meditation. Join us and dedicate yourself to savasana and learning how to just be. This class will leave you feeling rejuvenated\, de-stressed and mentally clear. \nDiane Saccone\, MS MT (ASACP) ERYT 500 spent the majority of her career in the field of Clinical Laboratory medicine changing careers after her move with her husband to Western North Carolina in 2005. She also developed the active older adult program at the YMCA of Western North Carolina where she served as the Director of Healthy Aging Initiatives and traveled through the Y of the USA as a subject matter expert on aging; lecturing and teaching evidence based falls prevention programs across the country. SUMMARY:The Somatics of Trauma w/ Meredith Rosenbluth
DESCRIPTION:The Somatics of Trauma is a compassionate\, educational\, and experiential workshop designed to help you understand trauma through the lens of the body—both in impact and in healing. \nWe’ll explore the ways our bodies are wired to protect us; what trauma is and why it can lock the protective instinct on overdrive; and how to somatically support ourselves in finding safety and ease\, both during activation and as a baseline in our lives. Through lecture\, personal reflection\, group discussion\, and gentle movement practices\, this workshop invites a deeper sense of self-understanding and provides practical tools to bolster nervous system regulation and resilience. \nIn this workshop\, we will learn: \n\nThe overall functions of the nervous system\nThe types of protective responses and how to identify them within yourself\nThe definition of trauma and types of trauma (acute vs. complex)\nWhy working with the body is essential in trauma healing\nWhat the aims of trauma healing work actually are and myths we are often fed about it\nIn the final hour of the workshop\, we will practice accessible\, body-based tools to help calm the nervous system\, restore balance when dysregulated\, and cultivate a greater sense of safety in daily life\n\n\nBy the end of this workshop\, you will: \n\nUnderstand the functions and operations of the nervous system\nExamine and understand trauma\, its causes\, and its somatic impacts from a compassionate and objective lens\nDevelop awareness of your primary protective nervous system responses; when they are echoes of trauma; and how to be with them rather than act from them\nCultivate greater tenderness towards your body’s responses and the wisdom inherent in them\nLearn simple movement practices to support self-regulation and emotional balance in everyday life\nLeave with a sense of empowerment\, clarity\, and a renewed connection to your body’s innate capacity for healing \n\nAs humans\, we are wired for connection; healing happens interpersonally. This workshop is an invitation to settle\, to learn\, to be curious\, to feel\, to move\, to connect\, to reflect\, to integrate\, and to be. \nMeredith Rosenbluth is a somatic emotional health coach and educator. SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Yoga & The Quest for The True Self by Stephen Cope
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! Community Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. Please consider checking out from your local library\, or buying used. The audiobook is available as well. \nFrom GoodReads.com: \nMillions of Americans know yoga as a superb form of exercise and as a potent source of calm in our stress-filled lives. Far fewer are aware of the full promise of yoga as a 4\,000-year-old practical path of liberation—a path that fits the needs of modern Western seekers with startling precision. \nNow Stephen Cope\, a Western-trained psychotherapist who has lived and taught for more than ten years at the largest yoga center in America\, offers this marvelously lively and irreverent “pilgrim’s progress” for today’s world. He demystifies the philosophy\, psychology\, and practice of yoga\, and shows how it applies to our most human dilemmas: from loss\, disappointment\, and addiction\, to the eternal conflicts around sex and relationship. And he shows us that in yoga\, “liberation” does not require us to leave our everyday lives for some transcendent spiritual plane—life itself is the path. \nAbove all\, Cope shows how yoga can heal the suffering of self-estrangement that pervades our society\, leading us to a new sense of purpose and to a deeper\, more satisfying life in the world. \nFor more information on the book club facilitator Stephen\, please see his teacher profile here!  He teaches donation-based Warm Vinyasa Flow Mondays 7:30am-8:30am\, Gentle Flow Mondays 12:15-1:15pm\, and Warm Vinyasa Flow Tuesdays 4:15pm-5:15pm. SUMMARY:Breathwork for Transcendence w/ Andrew Greene
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nWhile sometimes intense\, breathwork is an incredibly safe and simple modality. All that is required is a little bit of focus and effort to get beyond your normal waking state. \nThis workshop will allow you to go beyond your mind\, enabling you to access a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you. You may experience powerful emotions\, receive unexpected guidance\, or even find that your body has released long-held aches and pains. \nThe workshop will begin with a brief grounding practice\, and end with an integration circle. A carefully curated playlist will guide you through the breathwork portion. \nEveryone will be provided with a yoga mat\, blankets\, and an eye covering so that their experience can be as internal and private as possible. If you would prefer to bring your own eye-mask\, please do. \nThe only necessary preparation is to abstain from eating a heavy meal at least 3 hours before the event. A *light* lunch or small snack at least an hour beforehand is okay. This is because deep breathwork will cause a lot of movement in your internal organs\, and a full stomach could turn into an upset stomach. You will be laying down the entire time. \nFor more information on Andrew\, please see his teacher profile here! Andrew teaches weekly donation-based Warm Vinyasa Flow Mondays 4:15pm-5:15pm and Gentle Flow Thursdays 9:30am-10:30am. \nCost: $30 \n\nFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk or email Kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:Happy Hips & Hamstrings w/ Jot Anant
DESCRIPTION:We’ll begin with an in-depth anatomical lecture to help you better understand the structure and function of your hips and hamstrings. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach\, this workshop invites you to appreciate your own unique skeletal shape\, joint orientation\, and muscular patterns. With this foundational knowledge\, you’ll be empowered to adapt your practice in ways that truly serve your body. \nTightness in the hips and hamstrings often develops from everyday habits—running\, sitting\, walking\, stress\, or repetitive movement patterns. Over time\, unconscious compensation and postural habits can create restriction\, discomfort\, or pain. By deepening your understanding of anatomy and common yoga alignment cues\, you’ll begin to unravel tension and create sustainable\, functional mobility. \nA special highlight of this workshop is our partnered mobility exploration. You’ll team up to explore hip joint and hamstring mobility together\, using guided techniques to better understand your own anatomical structure. Through observation\, feedback\, and supported movement\, you’ll gain insight into how your bones move within the joint\, where your natural boundaries lie\, and how to work with—not against—your body. \nFollowing the lecture and partner work\, we’ll move into an integrated practice that weaves together Yang and Yin styles: \n\nYang flow to build heat\, strength\, and length\, particularly along the back line of the body and around the full circumference of the hips.\nYin postures to gently target the joints and connective tissues\, inviting deep release and restoration.\n\nProps will be thoughtfully incorporated to ensure that every participant feels both supported and appropriately challenged. \nThroughout the workshop\, you’ll learn how to strengthen and stabilize these regions while cultivating greater mobility and ease. As we work toward a variety of peak postures\, you’ll experience how balancing effort and surrender creates spaciousness\, resilience\, and freedom in the body. \nEach participant will receive a detailed PDF handout filled with key insights and practical tools to continue exploring long after the workshop ends. \nAre you ready to stretch\, strengthen\, and discover new possibilities within your body? We can’t wait to move\, learn\, and explore together. \nPlease note: this workshop is 3 hours long. \nCost: $45Financial Aid Available \n \nFor more information on Jot Anant\, please visit her website at www.JotAnant.org\, or see her teacher profile here. Jot Anant teaches weekly donation-based Vinyasa Flow Thursdays 9-10:30am\, Warm Yin Fridays 6-7:15pm and Gentle Flow Saturdays 9-10am. \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:Kirtan w/ Mantra Mandala
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 4:30pm\, Kirtan is 5-6:30pm. \nMantra Mandala will feature Jeremy Staum (vocals\, harmonium)\, Nina Kawar (vocals\, percussion)\, & Mackenzie Wilkins (vocals\, drums). \nDoors open at 4:30pm\, Kirtan is 5-6:30pm. SUMMARY:Human Mandala Yoga: Creating Group Sacred Geometry w/ Pashupa Goodwin
DESCRIPTION:Human Mandala Yoga is a transformative group yoga experience where participants create stunning geometric formations with fellow yogis\, interlocking your bodies into intricate mandala patterns that radiate symmetry and beauty.  \nHave you ever seen or experienced partner yoga? Human Mandala Yoga offers many of the same benefits:  \n\nCommunity and connection – the interdependence of the poses creates a shared experience\, which is both fun and therapeutic.\nTrust and communication – participants learn to coordinate and support each other\nPlayfulness – it is a joyful practice that often produces laughter\, surprise\, and lots of opportunity for heart openings.\n\nThe Human Mandala Yoga Workshop contains two components:\n\nThe 2.5 hour workshop at ACY will begin with partner and small group flows\, and then we will learn choreography for a large group flow that will include everyone! \nThen\, we will relocate 3 minutes down the road to Lake View Park to practice the sequence in the wild. We will record the sequence with professional drone videography and photographs\, which will be shared with all of the participants. (if the weather doesn’t cooperate\, we will choose a rain date).\n\nThis isn’t just about striking poses; it’s about cultivating trust\, synchronicity\, and community. Each formation requires participants to support and connect with one another\, creating interdependent shapes that mirror the sacred geometry found in traditional mandalas. The practice becomes a meditation on unity\, balance\, and our interconnection with each other and the earth beneath us. \nBy the end of this workshop\, you’ll have mastered a complete mandala sequence and experienced creating it in nature – setting the foundation for an ongoing community practice in beautiful outdoor settings. You will be invited to join our email list\, and we will plan more outdoor mandala meet-ups all summer long! \nWhat to bring to outdoor session: \n\nYoga mat\nWater\, sunscreen\, comfortable fitted clothing (bonus points for wearing ACY shirts!)\nSense of adventure and playfulness!\n\nWhat You’ll Take Home: \n\nA complete mandala sequence you can practice anywhere\nProfessional drone footage and photos of your outdoor session\nConnection to an ongoing summer community for future outdoor mandalas\nNew partner yoga and group synchronization skills\nBeautiful shareable content and memories\n\nFor more information on Pashupa\, please see his teacher profile here.
