SUMMARY:Savasana: The Art to Complete Relaxation w/ Diane Saccone
DESCRIPTION:Because we normally move our bodies around\, the movements of the mind are not so apparent. But when we learn to hold the pose and remain still\, suddenly\, we notice clearly how agitated the mind is. \nSavasana\, or basic relaxation pose\, is one of the most important and ancient poses in yoga. The practice of savasana or corpse pose\, is meditative. It can be the doorway to deeper states of meditation and gives the student the most important gift that can be given. This gift is called disidentification. \nIn Chapter I of the Yoga Sutras\, Patanjali discusses the false identification of thoughts and Self. He teaches that this false identification is at the root of all misery. He further teaches that yoga practices are about dissolving this false identification. The great gift of savasana is that the student can begin to separate from his/her thoughts. As one moves more deeply through relaxation\, one begins to enter another state in which thought is experienced as a surface phenomenon. Then\, one can begin to experience a little space between the thought and what is perceived as the Self. \nOne teacher has said\, “The problem with our thoughts is that we believe them.” The problem with believing our thoughts is that we then act from them in a way that can cause suffering in ourselves and others. When a little space is experienced between one’s thoughts and the consciousness\, which is the background for thought\, then thought does not have the same power. Thus\, with this dis-identification comes choice. When one dis-identifies with the thought\, one can choose to act from that thought or not; it no longer has as much power to control. When one can act from choice\, this leads to freedom. The gift of beginning to understand the process of dis-identification is arguably the most powerful gift one can receive. \nStaying still is a powerful practice. When one learns to hold savasana\, one learns to let the stillness of the body become a backdrop for the constant movement of the mind. This art of consciously staying still begins to teach the art of meditation. Join us and dedicate yourself to savasana and learning how to just be. This class will leave you feeling rejuvenated\, de-stressed and mentally clear. \nDiane Saccone\, MS MT (ASACP) ERYT 500 spent the majority of her career in the field of Clinical Laboratory medicine changing careers after her move with her husband to Western North Carolina in 2005. SUMMARY:Partner Yoga & Thai Bodywork w/ Leaflin Winecoff
DESCRIPTION:Partner yoga is a great way to connect with your asana practice in a new way\, while deepening connection with a loved one. \nThai yoga massage (sometimes called “lazy person’s yoga”) is an ancient practice that can be described as a symbiotic healing dance\, where the benefits of yoga are experienced by both the giver and the receiver. We use hands\, feet\, elbows\, knees\, rhythm and gravity to gently open the energetic channels of the body\, restoring ease and flow. This practice is done fully clothed on a mat on the floor\, and typically does not use oils. \nThe aim of this workshop is to foster connection through curiosity\, compassion\, and communication\, and awaken our innate healing capabilities! We’ll warm up with a few simple partner yoga practices before delving into some basic (but extremely effective!) Thai -inspired massage techniques. \nThe basics of intelligent body mechanics\, giving and receiving\, and cultivation of loving kindness are paramount to to this practice\, and will be cultivated throughout. This is not a training to become a professional bodyworker\, but is meant to provide participants with useful tools to be shared with friends and loved ones. The hope is that you’ll leave feeling great in your own body\, and inspired to help others feel great in theirs! *Please do come with a partner you feel comfortable practicing with. \nPlease note: This workshop is limited to 20 participants and you must come with a partner in order to participate. Both people need to register on Mindbody to reserve your space! \n*Modifications and variations will be shared for every technique taught as there is no one-size-fits-all massage. Please arrive in good health and ability to communicate your body’s needs. \n*You must be a Licensed Massage Therapist in the state of North Carolina to charge for bodywork. Please share this practice responsibly with those you trust. \nFor more information on Leaflin\, please see her teacher profile here. She teaches weekly donation-based Gentle Flow on Wednesdays 6:15pm-7:15pm. \n \nCost: $30 per personFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk\, call\, or email kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org. \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Who Do You Want To Be When You Grow Old By Richard J. Leider & David Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! Special guest community member Rob Koegel is co-hosting this round with Stephen Volkman\, so please join us in community to discuss “Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old?: The Path of Purposeful Aging” by Richard J. Leider & David Shapiro. \nCommunity Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. Please consider checking out from your local library\, or buying used. The audiobook is available as well. \nThis book brings to life the dramatic differences between two views of aging. The first\, by far the most common\, is fearful of “getting old.” The second\, while aware of age-related challenges\, is intrigued by the untapped possibilities of “growing old.” Some of the questions we will explore in our highly interactive discussion are: \nWhat enables some elders to blend wisdom with grace\, purpose with meaning\, and personal transformation with social contribution? What can they teach us about how to make the most of these life-enhancing opportunities? \nHow does living in an ageist society affect how we think about and respond to the complex process of aging? \nHow can we deepen our ability to use the challenges and possibilities of aging to hone our inner strengths and to become more of the person we long to be? \nSince our discussion will be based on the questions\, concerns\, andexperiences of the participants\, please join us even if you have only read part of this book. \nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. If you have any questions regarding registration\, please email Kelsey at  kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \nLate Policy: Doors will close at the workshop start time. SUMMARY:6 Week Series for Bone Health (In-Person & Virtual) w/ Diane Saccone
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This date refers to the first of 6 sessions. This course will occur over 6 consecutive Mondays from January 26th through March 2nd from 10:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. Should you need to miss a session\, it will be recorded and accessible for 2 months. \nFrailty Syndrome is a term used to describe a body-wide set of interconnected issues including musculoskeletal\, cardiovascular\, metabolic and immunologic systems. This group of symptoms is related to the decline of health as we age either as a result of habit\, chronic disease or a combination of both. As we move less\, muscular weakness and atrophy set in\, which cascades to the nervous system\, causing the nervous system not to fire as efficiently because of the lack of muscles to stimulate into action. \nPoor habits\, social isolation and lifestyle contribute to accelerated aging as well as stress and a negative attitude on life. This series will incorporate yoga techniques and strength training to combat common results of Frailty Syndrome\, like Sarcopenia and Osteoporosis. \nSarcopenia- The loss of muscle mass\, where the muscles that die and are replaced by fat\, begins around the age of 30 along with loss of bone mineral density at the rate of 1% per year. \nOsteoporosis-The risk of bone fracture- increases due to the increasing loss of bone mineral density as we move past the age of 30.  \nYou will also learn how our sensory faculties work in concert to create efficient neuromuscular movement\, sensorimotor integration\, and musculoskeletal activation. We will examine how the brain integrates and processes information and input from the visual\, sensory\, and vestibular systems and how yoga and functional fitness can help us enhance neuromuscular integration to maintain stability and mobility throughout our lives. \nAdditional skills we will learn include: \n\nThe importance of proprioception\, especially how the proprioceptively rich palms of the hands and soles of the feet play a key role in establishing better balance in both stillness and movement\nDiscussions around new research about proprioception that shows how it may help restore balance in cases of stroke\, Parkinson’s\, and other chronic conditions that affect walking\nHow to enhance proprioceptive awareness through asana practice\nHow to work with breath-based asana practice to progressively build better balance and stabilize your system from the core outward\nThe role of the foot in maintaining postural equilibrium as the foot moves from static placement to shifting balance in the activities of daily living\, such as walking\, stair climbing\, and reaching\nSimple steps you can take throughout the day to improve your balance\n\nThis course will be available through zoom recordings and digital for those who do not live closeby or may miss a class. Recordings will be available for 2 months after the program concludes. \nStudents will receive a workbook along with the course and this course qualifies for 20 CEUs with Yoga Alliance. Please arrive early for ample time to park and settle in.\nWhat is kirtan? \nDerived from a Sanskrit root meaning to call\, recite\, praise\, or glorify\, put simply\, kirtan is the act of praising and glorifying some form of divinity. While such glorification can be expressed in a variety of ways\, including through poetry\, drama\, dance\, or any form of oral recitation\, kirtan\, in its most well-known form\, is the call and response singing of a Sanskrit mantra. SUMMARY:Quintessential Pranayama w/ Leaflin Winecoff
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop about pranayama\, or breath control\, the 4th limb of yoga as described by Patanjali. \nBreath can be seen as a foundational medicine\, and is truly the gateway between the unconscious and the conscious; the body and the spirit. Pranayama practices have huge potential to increase the quality of our daily lives in profound ways\, and are a great way to prepare the body and mind for deeper meditation (the 7th of Patanjali’s limbs!). \nIn these 90 minutes\, we will cover 5 essential types of breath practices that correlate with different archetypal energies: Calming\, Balancing\, Energizing\, Clearing\, and Attuning. We will spend plenty of time gaining understanding of each breath\, as well as have an opportunity to meditate silently after each exercise in order to experience and absorb the unique effects of each practice. \nYou will leave with a deeper understanding of some classic and esoteric breath practices\, and a practical pranayama toolkit that you can take with you everywhere you go! \nLeaflin teaches a weekly donation-based Gentle Flow Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:15pm. To learn more about her\, please see her teacher profile here! \n  \n \nCost: $25 per personFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk\, call\, or email kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org. \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:Build your Sadhana w/ Drew JC
DESCRIPTION:Sadhana is our daily spiritual/wellbeing practice.\n\n\nThe essence of this workshop is to fortify you with an ‘every day’ home practice combining the fundamentals of kundalini yoga and meditation:  pranayama techniques (breath work)\, the bandhas ( body locks)\, spinal alignment\, mudras and mantra. Come explore the art of discipline and leave with an “every day” tool to start your day.  \n\nKundalini yoga\, unlike strictly asana practices\, focuses on harmonizing the nervous system with the endocrine system.  When activated and aligned\, these two systems give rise to our fully actualized self. A complete Kundalini practice includes a Kriya (a set of exercises with an intended result)\, breath\, meditation and mantra.  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this workshop we will:\n\n\nCover a brief history of kundalini yoga:  its roots\, how it spread around the world\, its utility as a daily maintenance practice for body\, mind and spirit and then dive deeper into the art of the practice\nExplore the nuances of body locks/the bandhas (Maha bandha and its 3 components)\nDiscuss the importance of proper spinal alignment\nLearn fundamental tools for effective pranayama\nUnderstand the benefits of opening the throat chakra through chanting\nTake a deep dive into various Kriyas: Sat Kriya\, stretch pose\, kriya for the adrenals and kidneys as well as Nabhi Kriya\n\n\nHow the workshop will flow: \n\nAn initial information session on the above topics\nExecute a complete practice together including kriya and a meditation with interspersed reminders of proper practice\nAmple time for Questions and Answers\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is for everyone!  As a novice\, it will dramatically shorten your learning curve through highlighting some of the fundamentals of the practice of kundalini yoga. As a seasoned practitioner\, it will strengthen your practice through thoughtful cues and deeper examinations of the how and why of each kriya we practice. \n\n\n\n\nDrew JC will offer depth from his 9 years teaching experience and 15 years of practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will leave this workshop with a home practice.\n\n\n  \nFor more information on Drew JC\, please see his teacher profile here!  \nCost: $30Financial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk\, call\, or email kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org. \n \n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:Breathwork for Deep Insight and Emotional Release w/ Andrew Greene
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nWhile sometimes intense\, breathwork is an incredibly safe and simple modality. All that is required is a little bit of focus and effort to get beyond your normal waking state. \nThis workshop will help you access the deep intelligence within your body that always knows exactly what you need. You may experience powerful emotions\, flashes of creativity\, or even find that your body has released long-held aches and pains. \nThe workshop will begin with a brief grounding practice\, and end with an integration circle. A carefully curated playlist will guide you through the breathwork portion. \nEveryone will be provided with a yoga mat\, blankets\, and an eye covering so that their experience can be as internal and private as possible. If you would prefer to bring your own eye-mask\, please do. \nThe only necessary preparation is to abstain from eating a heavy meal at least 3 hours before the event. A *light* lunch or small snack at least an hour beforehand is okay. This is because deep breathwork will cause a lot of movement in your internal organs\, and a full stomach could turn into an upset stomach. You will be laying down the entire time. \nFor more information on Andrew\, please see his teacher profile here!  \nCost: $30 \n\nFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk or email Kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. Registering in advance guarantees your spot and helps the studio have adequate staffing. If fewer than 5 participants register the event may be canceled. \nRefund Policy: We understand that life happens and unforeseen circumstances come up. SUMMARY:Astrology for Inner Alchemy: Personal Integration through the Signs and Planets w/ Meredith Rosenbluth
DESCRIPTION:Astrology for Inner Alchemy:\nPersonal Integration through the Planets and Signs\nIn this two hour workshop\, we will delve into our personal natal astrology charts through education\, group discussion\, journaling\, and guided visualization as a vehicle for transformation. \nYou will leave with an understanding of your personal chart alongside awareness of how your chart reflects sticky or challenging aspects of your life. Using your chart as a portal\, we will work with these challenging aspects in ways that invite new\, compassionate openings and meaningful self-integration. \nThis workshop is suitable for complete astrology beginners as well as seasoned astrologers! Astrology is an ancient science that maps each of our unique celestial imprints\, woven from a collection of archetypal energies. \nIn this workshop we will: • Learn the basics of how to read an astrology chart • Learn the meanings of each of the planets and signs • Discover the archetypal energies that are alive in your personal chart and how they show up for you\, both in shadow and light • Be guided through a process of internal inquiry around personal challenges\, wounds\, or patterns in your life\, investigating their correlations with your chart • Engage in practices to help shift your relationship to these personal challenges • Learn\, grow\, and connect in a dynamic and compassionate group container \n Astrology is not prescriptive; it is a mirror\, an invitation\, a blueprint within which we all uniquely animate the opportunities and challenges it contains. Exploring your life through this framework is one of many paths to increased self-understanding\, self-acceptance\, and healing. \nMeredith is devoted to cultivating attuned\, grounded\, vulnerable\, and joyful spaces to foster meaningful connection and transformation. All of you is welcome\, exactly as you are in any given moment\, always. SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! \nGather in community to discuss “Between The World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Community Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. Please consider checking out from your local library\, or buying used. The audiobook is available as well. \nFrom GoodReads.com: \n“This is your country\, this is your world\, this is your body\, and you must find some way to live within the all of it.” \n \nIn a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son\, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race\,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation\, and\, today\, threatened\, locked up\, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? \n \nBetween the World and Meis Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences\, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields\, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris\, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative\, reimagined history\, and fresh\, emotionally charged reportage\,Between the World and Meclearly illuminates the past\, bracingly confronts our present\, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward. \n \nFor more information on Stephen\, please see his teacher profile here! \nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person.
