SUMMARY:Yogi Book Club: Breath by James Nestor
DESCRIPTION:Free Community Event!\n \nGrab your book and save the date! \nGather in community to discuss “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art” by James Nestor. Community Members are welcome to join even if they are unable to finish the book\, as there is much value to be gained from discussion.  \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \n‘Who would have thought something as simple as changing the way we breathe could be so revolutionary for our health\, from snoring to allergies to immunity? A fascinating book\, full of dazzling revelations’ Dr Rangan Chatterjee \nThere is nothing more essential to our health and wellbeing than breathing: take air in\, let it out\, repeat 25\,000 times a day. Yet\, as a species\, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly\, with grave consequences. In Breath\, journalist James Nestor travels the world to discover the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. \nModern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can: \n– jump-start athletic performance– rejuvenate internal organs– halt snoring\, allergies\, asthma and autoimmune disease\, and even straighten scoliotic spines \nNone of this should be possible\, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge studies in pulmonology\, psychology\, biochemistry and human physiology\, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. \nYou will never breathe the same again. \n*ACY does not provide copies of the book. Please consider checking one out from a local library\, or ordering one used! \nPlease sign up in advance so we know to expect you! \nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. If you have any questions regarding registration\, please email Kelsey at  kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org

SUMMARY:Happy Hips & Hamstrings w/ Jot Anant
DESCRIPTION:The session will begin with an in-depth lecture\, diving into the anatomy of these areas to help you gain a better understanding of your unique and individual body structure. This foundational knowledge will empower you to support your own specific needs in your practice. \nTightness in the hips and hamstrings can stem from everyday activities like running\, sitting\, stress\, or even something as simple as walking. Often\, we carry unconscious movement patterns that may not serve us well\, leading to discomfort or even pain. By deepening your understanding of your anatomy\, postural habits\, and the mechanics of yoga poses\, you’ll begin to release the tension held in these regions\, creating more space and allowing energy to flow freely throughout the body. \nFollowing the lecture\, we’ll move into a dynamic flow. You’ll experience a deep\, Yang-style practice designed to create heat and length along the back line of the body\, with a focus on the full circumference of the hips. The session will also include Yin-style postures\, where you’ll rest and target the joints and connective tissues\, allowing for deep release and rejuvenation. Throughout\, props will be used to support all levels of practice\, ensuring that everyone feels both comfortable and challenged. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll learn how to strengthen and stabilize these areas to unlock greater mobility and freedom. As we work toward a variety of peak postures\, you’ll experience how the balance of Yin and Yang brings about spaciousness and ease in the body. \nEach participant will also receive a detailed PDF handout\, filled with valuable insights and tips to continue your journey beyond the workshop. \nAre you ready to stretch\, strengthen\, and unlock new possibilities in your body? I can’t wait to guide you through this transformative experience! \nPlease note: this workshop is 3 hours long. \nCost: $45Financial Aid Available \n \nFor more information on Jot Anant\, please visit her website at www.JotAnant.org. \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. Registering in advance guarantees your spot and helps the studio have adequate staffing. If fewer than 5 participants register the event may be canceled. \nRefund Policy: We understand that life happens and unforeseen circumstances come up. If life offers up an unexpected event and you need to withdraw from the workshop: \n\nA full refund will be issued if you need to withdraw 4+ days before the workshop.\nIf you need to withdraw within 3 days or fewer\, no refund is provided.\n\nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. If you have any questions regarding registration\, or financial aid\, please email Kelsey at  kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org

SUMMARY:Partner Yoga & Easy Thai Massage w/ Leaflin Winecoff
DESCRIPTION:Partner yoga is a great way to connect with your asana practice in a new way\, while deepening connection with a loved one. Thai yoga massage (sometimes called “lazy person’s yoga”) is an ancient practice that can be described as a symbiotic healing dance\, where the benefits of yoga are experienced by both the giver and the receiver. \nWe use hands\, feet\, elbows\, knees\, rhythm and gravity to gently open the energetic channels of the body\, restoring ease and flow. This practice is done fully clothed on a mat on the floor\, and typically does not use oils. The aim of this workshop is to foster connection through curiosity\, compassion\, and communication\, and awaken our innate healing capabilities! \nWe’ll warm up with a few simple partner yoga practices before delving into some basic (but extremely effective!) Thai massage techniques. The basics of intelligent body mechanics\, giving and receiving\, and cultivation of loving kindness are paramount to to this practice\, and will be cultivated throughout. \nThis is not a training to become a professional bodyworker\, but is meant to provide participants with useful tools to be shared with friends and loved ones. The hope is that you’ll leave feeling great in your own body\, and inspired to help others feel great in theirs! *Please do come with a partner you feel comfortable practicing with. \nPlease note: This workshop is limited to 20 participants and you must come with a partner in order to participate. \nBoth people need to register on Mindbody to reserve your space!\n*Modifications and variations will be shared for every technique taught as there is no one-size-fits-all massage. Please arrive in good health and ability to communicate your body’s needs. \n*You must be a Licensed Massage Therapist in the state of North Carolina to charge for bodywork. Please share this practice responsibly with those you trust. \n \nCost: $30 per personFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk\, call\, or email kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org. If life offers up an unexpected event and you need to withdraw from the workshop: \n\nA full refund will be issued if you need to withdraw 4+ days before the workshop. Please reach out for your refund\, as it will not be automatically applied to your account.\nIf you need to withdraw within 3 days or fewer\, no refund is provided.\n\nPlease create a Mindbody account for each participant if registering more than 1 person. If you have any questions regarding registration\, please email Kelsey at  kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org

SUMMARY:Yoga for Healing Trauma w/ Alexandra Culotta
DESCRIPTION:Trauma impacts everyone at some point in their life. These experiences are stored in the body and can contribute to lasting symptoms. \nIn this workshop\, we will address the ways traumatic events impact the body. We will find safety in our bodies and with each other. We will practice techniques for nervous system regulation and pain relief. We will practice deeper stretching to access trauma stored in the fascia of the body. \nThis workshop will begin with a discussion and handouts on the effects of trauma on the nervous system and body\, states of arousal\, tools for self regulation\, and methods for healing trauma. We will then move into a gentle Asana practice\, focused on breathwork\, centering\, and finding calm within the body. Participants will be invited to journal about their experience before a brief break. \nThe second half will begin with slightly more active practice involving bilateral hemisphere switching and release. As a group\, we will practice safety with others through optional shared contact exercises. \nOur final phase on our mats will be deeper gentle stretching\, to begin accessing the trauma stored within the body. Participants will be invited to journal once again\, before we close with a sharing circle. \nParticipants in this workshop will leave with: \n\nTools for self-regulation in moments of distress as well as general anxiety\nA renewed sense of safety in their bodies as well as with others\nPoses to calm and relieve pain associated with trauma and stress\nEnhanced understanding of how trauma impacts the body\nThe knowledge that they can opt out of any part of the workshop and/or do whatever makes them feel safe\, without criticism or judgement.\n\n\n\nCost: $30 \n\nFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk or email Kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. Registering in advance guarantees your spot and helps the studio have adequate staffing. If fewer than 5 participants register the event may be canceled. \nRefund Policy: We understand that life happens and unforeseen circumstances come up. SUMMARY:Community Kirtan w/ Mantra Mandala
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 6:30\, show is 7-8:30pm. Please arrive early for ample time to park and settle in.\n  \nWhat is kirtan? \nDerived from a Sanskrit root meaning to call\, recite\, praise\, or glorify\, put simply\, kirtan is the act of praising and glorifying some form of divinity. While such glorification can be expressed in a variety of ways\, including through poetry\, drama\, dance\, or any form of oral recitation\, kirtan\, in its most well-known form\, is the call and response singing of a Sanskrit mantra. Tap into the spiritual energy of bhakti yoga\, the yoga of love and devotion\, as you sing your way to joy and peace. \nMantra Mandala: \nMantra Mandala is a kirtan band based in Asheville\, NC. They weave melody\, rhythm\, and harmony to create an immersive sound that invites listeners into a journey of meditative bliss and devotion. \nMantra Mandala features Jeremy Staum (vocals\, harmonium)\, Nina Kawar (vocals\, percussion)\, Timothy Burgin (percussion) and Daniel Guyer (cello). \nThe band’s name\, Mantra Mandala\, represents the intention behind their music. Mantra and mandala are both meditation tools. Mantra is the repetition of sacred sounds. Mandala is a geometric design that represents the wholeness of the Self. The band’s music is like a mandala formed of mantras\, transporting listeners into the state of connectedness that is yoga. \nDoors open at 6:30\, show is 7-8:30pm. Please arrive early for ample time to park and settle in.\n  \nSliding Scale: $10- $30 \nPlease use the drop down menu to pay what you can to support this local band!\nNo one turned away due to lack of funds.  \n \n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:Breathwork for Awakening Inner Wisdom w/ Andrew Greene
DESCRIPTION:Breathwork for Awakening Inner Wisdom is an intense\, yet therapeutic workshop that empowers you to release physical\, mental\, and emotional blocks. \nWe so often try to improve our lives by using our minds\, and we forget that there is an intelligence in the body that can do miraculous things. In this workshop\, we will go beyond thinking\, letting your body take over and unleash its deep\, primal intelligence. Your inner wisdom knows the best course to take. \n\n\nWhile sometimes intense\, breathwork is an incredibly safe and simple modality. All that is required is a little bit of focus and effort to get beyond your normal waking state. \nParticipants from prior sessions have shared a wide range of experiences—some feeling a deep detoxification\, others sensing shifts into different dimensions\, and many entering profound meditative states. \n Yoga mats\, blankets\, and optional eye pillows will be provided. The only necessary preparation is to abstain from eating a heavy meal at least 3 hours before the event. A *light* lunch or small snack at least an hour beforehand is okay. This is because deep breathwork will cause a lot of movement in your internal organs\, and a full stomach could turn into an upset stomach. You will be laying down the entire time. \nCost: $30 \n\nFinancial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk or email Kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. Registering in advance guarantees your spot and helps the studio have adequate staffing. SUMMARY:Integrative Breathwork for Self-Discovery with Margaret Kirschner & Eddie LeShure
DESCRIPTION:ACY will provide eye-coverings for this workshop\, but please bring your own if you would prefer. \nIntegrative Breathwork is a powerful adjunct to meditation and yoga\, effective for working with addiction\, trauma\, depression\, and anxiety. The process is very safe and simple\, combining accelerated breathing with evocative music in an eyes closed setting. You remain in complete control of your own process. \nIntegrative Breathwork Sessions • Expand your mind • Receive inner guidance • Create and strengthen new neural pathways \nEvocative music and dynamic breathing open the door to insights and inner guidance • Learn to trust yourself • Know that your answers are within • Gain confidence\, feel lighter • Loosen the negative grip of past trauma \nDynamic Breathing\, Expanded Mind Taking fuller breaths more rapidly\, accompanied by carefully selected music that guides your experience\, can nudge you into a non-ordinary state of consciousness. Your brain’s typical default mode relaxes. Most of us have an overactive\, self-critical “monkey mind\,” which slips out of the way as we continue to breathe faster\, more deeply\, and continuously. Soon\, inner wisdom reveals important insights which can shift a dysfunctional habitual thinking pattern\, providing a new way to look at ourselves and our relationship to the events of our life. \nSoftens the Grip of Past Conditioning For many people\, noticing\, accepting\, and expressing authentic feelings is a learned skill that requires practice. A common phrase is “What you resist persists.” it is natural to resist what is uncomfortable and lean\, instead\, towards avoiding that discomfort by suppressing emotions and stifling the ones that we perceive are not acceptable\, such as anger or sadness\, perhaps. Integrative breathwork recognizes the pervasive impact of personal and collective trauma and responds with tools that untangle it while also intending to avoid re-traumatization. It is an efficient way to clear conditioned resistance. \nIf you are pregnant\, have cardiovascular concerns\, severe hypertension (untreated high blood pressure)\, severe mental illness\, epilepsy or have had recent surgery\, infection\, illness or fever\, please do not sign up.  If you have asthma\, please bring your inhaler with you. \n \nCost: $30Financial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk\, call\, or email kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org. \nMargaret Kirschner is a Certified Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Therapist (E-RYT 500 C-IAYT)\, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)\, ACISTE Certified Mental Health Professional (ACMHP)\, Peer Support Specialist (CPSS)\, Breathwork Facilitator and Birth Doula. Margaret safely supports individuals in learning to listen to and trust their bodies with an attitude of curiosity and compassion. Says Margaret\, “My greatest joy is witnessing people reclaiming their lives through the simple and profound practices of yoga\, breathwork\, and mindfulness.” \nEddie LeShure is a Certified Yoga Instructor (RYT 200)\, Meditation Teacher\, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)\, Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS)\, Spiritual Emergence Coach ® (IMHU)\,and Breathwork Facilitator. Eddie’s personal journey took him deep into the throes of active addiction and incarceration on a drug arrest. His two years behind bars were mostly spent in the notorious Attica Prison where he survived a rebellion in 1971 that killed 43 inmates and employees. As a survivor of extreme trauma\, his personal healing and how he works with others has always been guided by deep understanding and compassion. As co-owner of A Mindful Emergence LLC\, he provides preparation\, facilitation and integration for those intentionally using plant medicines and other psychedelics. His primary passion is providing trauma-sensitive\, somatic mindfulness and self-compassion practices to support us effectively embracing our full range of thoughts\, feelings and physical sensations. \nFor more information on Margaret and Eddie\, please see their website here. \n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming. SUMMARY:Alignment 101 w/ Dana Maria
DESCRIPTION: Strengthen and stabilize your practice to improve safety and confidence.\nYoga poses don’t have alignment—people do.  \nEver wonder why we do the poses the way we do them? Or why the posture doesn’t quite land in your body? Want to deepen your personal practice with a better understanding of the asana limb of yoga? \nJoin us for a 2-hour all-levels workshop where we’ll explore how to create alignment that works for your body. SUMMARY:SOMA Awakening Breathwork Journey w/ Kyle Espenshade
DESCRIPTION:Note: All breathwork techniques should ideally be done on an empty stomach\, or at least 1-2 hrs after eating a full meal. All levels are welcome. \nThe SOMA Breath is designed to give you energy\, clarity\, and improve fitness and endurance in a fun and exciting way. \nThis 2 hour workshop combines breathwork\, visualization\, and our signature SOMA Breath music that helps you synchronize your breathing to a perfect rhythm. \nSoma is a name given to a sacred shamanic ritual involving psychedelics\, breathwork and meditation. The rishis of ancient India would partake of this sacred medicine and receive profound visions about the eternal truths of the universe. Originally a tradition that was passed down orally\, they eventually began to write down their Divine downloads in texts such as the Rig Veda. Through their practice\, they were able to achieve complete mastery of their physical body and mental faculties. \nThis special ritual involving special tribal music\, chanting\, proprietary music technology and breathwork will alter your state of consciousness in a profound way without the need for ingesting psychedelics. In a similar way to the rishis you may receive downloads\, visions and moments of great inspiration. \nThe key to manifesting is reaching peak emotional states and implanting intentions in this heightened state. Use this time to create powerful visualizations of the future you want to create. Your sexual energy will become charged and your personal magnetism will expand. \nBoosts & Improves: Oxygen efficiency\, respiratory & cardiovascular health\, immune system\, bodily coherence\, blood sugar levels\, vitality\, stamina\, endurance\, tissue/muscle/cell repair & production\, flow of cerebrospinal fluid\, directed neurogenesis\, concentration\, cognitive function\, memory\, emotional & hormonal balance\, confidence\, growth & circulation of stem-cells for the ultimate healing & regeneration \nReleases & Relieves: Asthma\, arthritis\, aches & pains\, sleep disorders\, high blood pressure\, nasal blockages\, addictive behaviors\, past traumas\, anxiety\, depression\, resentment\, anger & other negative thoughts & emotions \nCost: $30Financial Aid Available- Please stop by the front desk or email Kelsey@ashevillecommunityyoga.org \n \nPLEASE NOTE: We encourage pre-registration for all programming.
